HARMAN WINS US CUP IN ARIZONA
He won the United States Golf Teachers Cup 5 times in an 8-year span, but with his last victory coming in 2005, Mark Harman’s days of taking the title again appeared over. Somehow turning back the clock, the 54-year-old Harman, playing with the young guys out of the Open division, fired rounds of 71-71 -142 to romp home with a 5-stroke victory October 10-11 at Talking Stick Golf Club’s North Course in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Defending champion Bill Hardwick shot a 2-under 69 to take the first-round lead, and it appeared as if the two-time champion would make a strong run at a third title. Harman was in second, two shots back, followed by 2015 Open division champion Michael Wolf at 74 and 2015 World Golf Teachers Cup champion Rebecca Samuelsson at 75. But Hardwick, who had a poor warm-up session and never found his rhythm from the get-go, went 6-over the first four holes while Harman went 3-under during that span, turning a two-stroke deficit into a 7-shot lead in rapid order over both Hardwick and Samuelsson. Harman’s lead over both was 8 shots at the turn, a lead that proved insurmountable.
Hardwick held on to take the Super Senior title, while two-time Cup champion Dave Belling fired a final-round 72 to overtake Wolf (77) for the Senior championship. Samuelsson won the Ladies title for the second consecutive year, and Brian McMahon won the Legends division.
